Senior Day Battle Ends in Defeat for Women's Basketball

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Basketball celebrated three seniors in Abi Bandstra, Lily Helmuth, and Jaxi Long as they geared up for their final regular season game on the 2025-26 season with a matchup against #24 Indiana Tech inside of the Mol Arena. The Warriors held the top spot in the WHAC with an overall record of 22-5 and a conference record of 19-2. Cornerstone, amid a tight middle of the conference, held the eighth spot in the WHAC, just managing to get their foot in the conference tournament. 

The Golden Eagles struggled in the first half to get much offense going against the Warriors, shooting just 25.9% from the field and going 0-10 from three. The Warriors shut down Cornerstone in the first half to hold a 23-point lead 38-15 at the end of the first two periods. The Warriors continued to deny the Golden Eagles for the rest of the contest as Cornerstone only was able to hit 16 shots from the field, for a FG% of 30.2%. Indiana Tech took down Cornerstone on their Senior Day 65-39.

Women's Basketball will look ahead to the first round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament on February 25, against the Warriors of Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Ind. The time is TBD.

Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 56 #24 Indiana Tech – 49

  • First Quarter

    • The first points on the contest for Cornerstone came from Julie Ashbaugh, as her layup fell through to make it 2-0 for Cornerstone.

    • Jaxi Long made a layup to tie it up early in the first quarter 6-6.

    • The Warriors went on a 10-0 run at the end of the first quarter that gave them the lead at the end of the first period 16-6.

  • Second Quarter

    • The Warriors opened up the second quarter with a 14-point run, shutting down an opportunity for Cornerstone to break through.

    • Gracie Gortmaker broke the scoring drought for the Golden Eagles with a layup, but Cornerstone found themselves facing a mountain to climb. The Warriors held the lead 31-8 with under four minutes to play in the half.

    • Another layup for Gracie Gortmaker broke Cornerstone into double-digits, as they trailed 33-11.

    • The last points of the half for Cornerstone came from Julie Ashbaugh, whose jumper fell through as the Golden Eagles headed to the locker room down by 23 points 38-15.

  • Third Quarter

    • The Golden Eagles remained quiet from the floor in the third quarter, only adding four points to their total in the first five minutes of play. Indiana Tech held a dominant lead 48-19 with under five to go.

    • Julie Ashbaugh would be the final Golden Eagles to knock down a point in the third quarter as #24 Indiana Tech held strong going into the final period 53-20.

  • Fourth Quarter

    • Two three pointers off the jump by Cornerstone seemed to ignite a new flame in the home team. Jaxi Long and Maddie Schuur knocked down three pointers as Cornerstone remained behind 55-26.

    • Jaxi Long made a contested jumper as they still trailed by 32 points 60-28.

    • Abby Hall knocked down a three for her first points of the game with just about five minutes to play in regulation. The Warriors remained on top 62-35.

    • The layup by Maddie Schuur at the third minute mark would be the last points for Cornerstone in their 2025-26 regular season. The Warriors took the win inside of the Mol Arena 65-39.

By the Numbers 

13/9 – Julie Ashbaugh led the way for Cornerstone in the tough contest with 13 total points and nine rebounds on the day.

9/9 – Gracie Gortmaker knocked down nine points in the contest and had nine rebounds, just short of a double-double performance.
