Chicago, Ill. – Men's Volleyball traveled to Chicago, Illinois for games against Saint Ambrose and #2 Saint Xavier. After hard fought battles in both matches the Golden Eagles dropped both games 3-0.
Kyle Kuebler led CU with 12 total kills on the day. Cornerstone will head to Ohio for the next match against Defiance College on February 27th at 7 p.m.
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 0 Saint Ambrose – 3 (23-25, 22-25, 17-25)
First Set: Cornerstone – 23 Saint Ambrose – 25
- The match began with Cornerstone taking a 5-3 lead off two kills from Matthew True and Ryder Roberts.
- CU maintained their lead going up 13-10 with kills by Kyle Kuebler and JeQuarri Shannon.
- Saint Ambrose went on a four-point run which saw them tie the first set at 18.
- The Fighting Bees took their first lead of the set with a 23-19 advantage, but the Golden Eagles stormed back with three straight points to get within one highlighted by a block by Ethan Walker and an ace by Mitchell Carrera.
- An error by CU gives SAU the set one victory 25-23.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 22 Saint Ambrose – 25
- The second set saw Cornerstone take a 5-3 lead again off back-to-back aces by Mitchell Carrera.
- Cornerstone stayed ahead 10-9 off a kill from Matthew True and a few errors by the Fighting Bees.
- Kills by Kyle Kuebler and Ryder Roberts kept the set in CU's favor making it 16-15.
- The Golden Eagles continued to hold a one-point lead as a kill by Andrew Galanes made it 20-19.
- Saint Ambrose got three straight points to take a 22-20 lead over CU.
- The Golden Eagles are unable to mount a comeback and drop set two 22-25.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 17 Saint Ambrose – 25
- The third set started with CU going down 6-5 with Kyle Kuebler recording multiple kills.
- Cornerstone took a 10-9 lead as Ryder Roberts paired with JeQuarri Shannon for a block and then followed that up with a kill.
- The Fighting Bees went on a 10-2 run to take a 19-12 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- CU got five more points highlighted by an ace and a kill from Ethan Walker, but the Fighting Bees took the third and final set 25-17.
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 0 #2 Saint Xavier – 3 (17-25, 16-25, 20-25)
First Set: Cornerstone – 17 Saint Xavier – 25
- The match began with Saint Xavier taking a 5-0 lead over CU.
- Cornerstone fought back to get within two off multiple errors by the Cougars.
- A kill by Kyle Kuebler and more errors by SXU made it a 16-12 set in favor of the Cougars.
- The Golden Eagles scored five more points off a kill by Andrew Galanes and errors by Saint Xavier, but SXU secured a 25-17 set one win.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 16 Saint Xavier– 25
- The second set began with CU getting out to a 6-5 lead with two kills by Kyle Kuebler and one by Andrew Galanes.
- SXU took a six-point lead over the Golden Eagles but multiple errors by the Cougars kept CU close.
- Cornerstone stayed within six off another kill by Kyle Kuebler.
- Saint Xaiver took set two winning 25-16.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 20 Saint Xavier– 25
- The third set started with Cornerstone on top 5-3 with kills by Kyle Kuebler and Andrew Galanes.
- SXU got out to a three-point lead after getting three-straight points.
- The Cougars continued to extend their lead over Cornerstone but a kill by Ryder Roberts kept CU within six.
- The Golden Eagles battled back to get within three off three errors by SXU to make it a 22-19 game.
- Saint Xaiver completed the sweep defeating Cornerstone 25-20 in the final set.
