Women’s Basketball Cannot Keep the Pace Against the Warriors Falling 67-47

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Golden Eagles entered this matchup against the Rochester Christian Warriors on a four-game win streak. The game stayed within striking distance for the Golden Eagles until the fourth quarter when the Warriors closed out a strong away performance winning 67-47. The Ladies will look to bounce back on Wednesday, February 11thas they host Michigan-Dearborn for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. 
 
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 67 Rochester Christian – 47
First Quarter
  • The Golden Eagles opened the scoring through Laura Innerebner as she cashed in on a three pointer to give Cornerstone their first lead of the game. 
  • Rochester Christian responded well with a five-point run to take a 5-3 lead over the Golden Eagles at the seven-minute mark. 
  • Gracie Gortmaker sparked the offense back quickly with two more buckets for the home squad as they led 7-5 halfway through the first quarter. 
  • The Warriors found another run to jump out to a 14-9 lead with less than a minute to play in the opening quarter. 
  • Gracie Gortmaker finished the first quarter with eight points as she led the Golden Eagles keeping them within striking distance down 14-11. 
Second Quarter 
  • The Warriors continued their strong performance shooting as they started the second quarter on a six-point run. 
  • Maddie Schuur and Julie Ashbaugh added buckets for Cornerstone to make the game 22-16 with seven minutes on the clock in the second quarter. 
  • The Golden Eagles struggles on the defensive side of the ball continued with the Warriors taking a 30-16 lead past the halfway point of the second quarter. 
  • Ellie Neuhaus played a strong role in the second quarter with back-to-back buckets coming at a crucial moment for the Golden Eagles looking to stay close to the Warriors. 
  • Gracie Gortmaker earned a three point play the tough way with a foul and bucket to keep the momentum moving in favor of the Golden Eagles as they trailed 36-27 with one minute remaining. 
  • Jaxi Long helped close the first half on a high note with an important three-point bucket as Cornerstone only remained eight points behind at the halfway mark of the contest. 
Third Quarter
  • The first two minutes of the quarter both teams traded three-point buckets thanks to Jaxi Long keeping the Golden Eagles close. 
  • Abby Hall found her first points of the game come in the third quarter with a corner three pointer, yet Cornerstone still trailed 43-36. 
  • Jaxi Long slashed well into the paint and found herself an important bucket to bring the Golden Eagles within six-points of the visiting Warriors. 
  • Rochester Christian closed out the third quarter in dominant fashion with an eight-point run to take a 54-40 lead. 
Fourth Quarter 
  • The Golden Eagles started the fourth quarter well finding all the right passes but were unable to convert as they continued to trail 54-40 with eight minutes left in the game. 
  • Jaxi Long secured the first bucket of the fourth quarter with a deep three that began to change the momentum towards the home team. 
  • Gracie Gortmaker made the big difference on the defensive side forcing multiple turnovers which pulled Cornerstone within nine points of Rochester Christan with six minutes to play. 
  • The streaky play from the Warriors continued to tell the story as they put together another eight-point run and led 62-45 at the halfway point of the fourth quarter. 
  • The Golden Eagles comeback attempt fell short in the end as they were defeated 67-47.

15/3 – Gracie Gortmaker led the Golden Eagles with 15 points and three steals in the game.
13/6 – Jaxi Long chipped in 13 points and hauled in six boards in the contest.

The Golden Eagles next test comes against Michigan-Dearborn as they host the Wolverines on Wednesday, February 11that 5:30 p.m.
