Grand Rapids, Mich. – Cornerstone University hosted Mount Vernon Nazarene to finish out the week of competition for the Golden Eagles. The prior matchup between these two sides saw the Cougars take the win at home 3-1.
The first set saw the Golden Eagles struggle to find a rhythm, as the Cougars took it comfortably 25-16. A few adjustments to the rotation by Head Coach Alex Bahn helped Cornerstone find their groove in set two as they took it 25-19 over Mount Vernon. The third set saw a huge mental battle between the two sides, as the set went into the 30s. Cornerstone ultimately won out in the set and the mental battle in set three 34-32. With the momentum on their side, Cornerstone swung the fourth set their way to close out the home win 25-22 and 3-1.
Men's Volleyball will travel to Rochester Hills, Mich. where they will take on the Warriors of Rochester Christian University. The contest will take place on March 24, at 7 p.m.

Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 MVNU – 19

Cornerstone came swinging into the second set with three points in-a-row, rounded out by a kill from Ethan Walker that made it 3-0.

The Cougars responded and tied the set back up 3-3.

A block error and an attack error by Mount Vernon Nazarene helped Cornerstone back to the lead 6-4.

Another 4-0 run by the Cougars leaped them into the lead 11-9 in the second set.

The Golden Eagles tied set two back up 13-13 thanks to a kill by Matthew True.

Matthew True grabbed another kill as Cornerstone went up 17-15.

A libero kill from Mitchell Carrera saw its way to the floor that helped Cornerstone to a four-point lead 20-16.

The set two win for Cornerstone was completed by a kill from Ethan Walker that finished it out 25-19.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 34 MVNU – 32

The third set began with three points for Mount Vernon Nazarene right off the bat to put them up 3-0.

Two attack errors by the Cougars tied the set back up 8-8.

The Kill by Ethan Walker kept the set tied up 10-10 as both teams struggled to pull ahead of the other.

Two more attack errors by the Cougars sent Cornerstone into the lead 15-14.

Andrew Galanes smashed the ball down for a kill that put Cornerstone up by two points 20-18.

The kill by Matthew True brought the set to its first set point opportunity for the Golden Eagles 24-23.

The Cougars had the advantage 27-26 but the kill by Matthew True tied the set back up 27-27.

Matthew True and Ethan Walker both got kills that kept the Golden Eagles in the set. Set three entered the 30s as the teams were tied up 31-31.

A big kill by Andrew Galanes made it 33-32 and set point for the Golden Eagles. A final attack error by the Cougars saw Cornerstone to the win in set three 34-32.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 MVNU – 22

The mental battle was not over after the elongated third set. Ryder Roberts smashed a kill that kept it tied 2-2 early on in set four.

Three points in-a-row for Cornerstone saw the Golden Eagles to a lead 10-8 that came off of a service ace by Andrew Galanes.

JeQuarri Shannon got the kill that kept Cornerstone up 15-13.

Another kill by Matthew True saw Cornerstone to a five-point lead late in the set 20-15.

The kill by Andrew Galanes finished the 3-0 run by the Cougars and kept Cornerstone on top 21-18.

The final kill of the game came from the middle blocker JeQuarri Shannon that finished out the final set of action for Cornerstone 25-22. Cornerstone took the win on home turf 3-1 over the Cougars of Mount Vernon Nazarene.
By The Numbers:
25/5 – Matthew True led the way in the kill department for the Golden Eagles and the Cougars with 25 total kills in just four sets. Additionally, True put up five total blocks in the contest.
28/11/9 – 28 Assists came off the hands of Andrew Galanes who also put up 11 kills and nine total digs in the contest.
6 – Both Ethan Walker and JeQuarri Shannon put up six total blocks in a defensive battle against the Cougars.
24 – Kyle Hortness did his duty in the setting position with 24 total assists.
22 – The defense was rounded out thanks to a great performance by Mitchell Carrera who grabbed 22 digs in the hard fought win.
