Men's Volleyball Completes the Series Sweep Against Rochester Christian

Rochester Hills, Mich. – Cornerstone University traveled across the state to complete the season series against the Warriors of Rochester Christian. RCU began the night with a record of 0-13 in WHAC play and 0-17 overall in their inaugural season.

The first set saw the Golden Eagles keep the Warriors below double digits, as the Golden Eagles flew past them to win set one 25-8. The second set saw its way to Cornerstone's tally thanks to one final point scored on a service ace by Jakob Nebo, which completed the set 25-13. As the bench got cleared for Cornerstone, they struggled to get their offense going, as the Warriors managed to steal set three 25-21 over Cornerstone.

Men's Volleyball will continue in the regular season, as they host Indiana Tech in the Mol Arena on Friday, March 27 at 7 p.m.

Game Recap – Cornerstone – 3 Rochester Christian – 1 (25-8, 25-13, 21-25, 25-15)

First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rochester Christian – 8

  • The first set began with a 5-0 run for the Golden Eagles, as two kills by Braeden Schripsema put down two kills at the beginning on the night of action.

  • Ethan Walker got two kills in a row to make it 7-1 for Cornerstone, as the middles kept the points coming.

  • Another large run of seven points, finished off by a kill from JeQuarri Shannon pushed Cornerstone ahead in set one 13-2.

  • The Golden Eagles finished up the short set one of action with a six-point run, as Cornerstone took set one 25-8 over the Warriors.

Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rochester Christian – 13

  • Ryder Roberts opened up the second set with a kill, followed by a block from Braeden Schripsema and Ethan Walker that put Cornerstone up 3-1.

  • The Warriors tied the set up before a seven-point run by the Golden Eagles, who reclaimed the lead in set to 15-8.

  • Another block by Ethan Walker made it 18-9 in Cornerstone's favor, as the second set neared its end.

  • William Nix and Andrew Galanes got the double block up to push Cornerstone ahead by 10 points, 21-11.

  • A kill by Ryder Roberts and a service ace from Jakob Nebo completed the set two victory for Cornerstone. The Golden Eagles took set two by 12 points, 25-13 over the Warriors.

Third Set: Cornerstone – 21 Rochester Christian – 25

  • A kill by Kyle Kuebler saw Cornerstone to their first point in set three, as RCU led 2-1.

  • The Warriors managed to hold Cornerstone off and keep their lead in set three 9-4.

  • A three-point run by Cornerstone brought them within one point of the Warriors, thanks to kills from Mitchell Carrera, Kyle Kuebler, and William Nix.

  • A couple of substitutions were made to save set three for Cornerstone, but the damage had already been done. The Warriors held on to a six-point lead 22-16.

  • A service ace by Andrew Galanes made it 23-19, but Rochester Christian remained on top in set three of action.

  • Ethan Walker got a kill but Cornerstone were unable to complete the comeback in set three, as the Warriors took one set off of the Golden Eagles 25-21.

Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 21 Rochester Christian – 25

  • Cornerstone switched up the lineup going into set four, and saw immediate success as they took a 6-2 lead over the Warriors after a service ace by Mitchell Carrera.

  • The backrow attack by Patrick Burke saw its way to the floor as it hit off of the top of the net. Cornerstone took a 7-2 lead and forced Rochester Christian into an early timeout in set four.

  • A big block by Andrew Galanes and JeQuarri Shannon snuffed out the Rochester Offense to make it 12-7 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

  • A Matthew True kill and another kill by Ethan Walker extended the lead for the Golden Eagles to eight points, 18-10.

  • Another solo block by Ethan Walker continued the run for the Golden Eagles as the fourth set inched closer to its completion., 19-10.

  • Two kills in-a-row by JeQuarri Shannon kept Cornerstone's offense running, as they held a strong lead 21-11.

  • Teams traded service errors back and forth, as Cornerstone reached match point 24-12.

  • The Warriors fought back with a four-point run, but the decisive kill by Andrew Galanes sealed the four-set win for Cornerstone 25-15, and 3-1.

By The Numbers:

11/11 – Make a wish! Matthew True got 11 kills and 11 digs on the night in the four-set contest.

7/4 – Four more blocks to Ethan Walker's book, as they put down seven kills to keep Cornerstone moving on offense.

30 – Mitchell Carrera nears the 350 total career dig mark as he tallied 30 on the night against the Warriors!
