Grand Rapids, Mich. – Softball returned to action as they hosted the Wolverines of Michigan-Dearborn. Game one the Golden Eagles struggled to keep the pace late as Michigan-Deaborn broke the 4-4 tie to take game one 9-4 in the end. Game two was another story as the bats got hot for the home squad as they ran away with a 10-2 win. Cornerstone will be back in action on Wednesday, March 25
th for a battle against Aquinas starting at 3:00 p.m.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 4 Michigan-Dearborn – 9
- The doubleheader against the Wolverines started strong from the defensive side of the ball as Cornerstone held strong through the top of the first inning.
- The Golden Eagles first at bats were hot but Cornerstone left multiple runners in position to score as the 1st inning ended 0-0.
- Michigan-Dearborn opened the scoring on the day with a flurry of consistent swings that fired in the first run and allowed the visiting team to take a 1-0 lead after the 2nd.
- The very next inning the Wolverines saw a massive swing find its way past the fence and drive in a three-run shot to take a dominant early lead.
- Maddi Veersma led off the bottom of the 3rd inning with a walk and stolen base followed up by an Anna Griffioen double to drive in the Golden Eagles first run.
- The Golden Eagles capitalized once again in the contest after an error set up another set of runs with Cornerstone tying the game 4-4.
- The hot bats were tough to stop for Michigan-Dearborn as they ended the 4th inning with a pair of runs and 6-4 lead.
- After a scoreless 5th inning the Wolverines found themselves in another favorable spot as they saw a double into center field drive in three runs as Cornerstone suffered a 9-4 deficit.
- The Golden Eagles dropped game one of the doubleheaders although they had two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the 7th inning, but they were unable to drive home any scores.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 10 Michigan-Dearborn – 2
- Game two started much stronger for the Golden Eagles as they opened with consistent defense and held the Wolverines scoreless after the first inning.
- Kara Sandberg snatched a critical strikeout in the 2nd inning as Michigan-Dearborn left two runners in scoring position.
- Kaitlyn Cain, Alexis Ashbay, and Anna Griffioen went on a flurry of singles to drive in three runs for the home team and take the first runs of the game.
- Michigan-Dearborn was able to respond in the top of the 3rd inning as they drove in a run to make the contest 3-1.
- Morgan Jenkins and Anna Griffioen both secured RBI's in the 4th inning which forced Michigan-Dearborn into a pitching change.
- The change did not help the situation as Taylor Zwagerman singled and helped secure two more runs before closing out the inning with a 7-1 lead.
- The 5th inning started with an error on the Golden Eagles side as it set up an easy scoring position for the Wolverines as the game now stood at 7-2 after the top of the 5th.
- Alexis Ashbay led off the bottom of the 6th inning in style with a triple to set up a strong inning taking three more runs winning game two 10-2.
By the Numbers:
4 – The Golden Eagles had four separate runners steal a base across both games.

Anna Griffioen led the Golden Eagles at the plate with four hits and two doubles on the day.

Alexis Ashbay played well in the second game securing three hits and one being a triple that sparked the offense in the end.
