Matthew True Sets New Career High as Cornerstone Falls in Five Set Thriller

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Volleyball hosted #RV Indiana Tech where they saw themselves down 2-0 early in the match. Matthew True led the Golden Eagles into a near five set thriller comebacks after securing his single game career high in kills with 30 in the contest. Cornerstone now turns their focus to Senior Day as they host Defiance on Saturday, March 28th at 2:00 p.m. 
 
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 2 #RV Indiana Tech – 3 (24-26, 22-25, 25-16, 25-22, 6-15)

 
First Set: Cornerstone – 24 Indiana Tech – 26
  • The match started hot for Matthew True as he collected a pair of kills and a service ace to boost Cornerstone into a 5-3 lead. 
  • The set continued back worth with heavy service errors telling the story. 
  • Ethan Walker was at the heart of a three-man wall that shut down the Indiana Tech attack at the 13-10 mark in set one with Cornerstone in the lead. 
  • Andrew Galanes set up Ethan Walker for a monster kill as Cornerstone took their largest lead at 21-16. 
  • The Warriors refused to give up as they chipped away at the Cornerstone lead all the way into forcing a Golden Eagle timeout leading at 25-24 into extra points. 
  • Indiana Tech completed the impressive comeback in set one to steal the early 1-0 match advantage. 
Second Set: Cornerstone – 22 Indiana Tech – 25
  • Ryder Roberts opened the second set with a strong swing bringing Cornerstone to a 2-0 lead after two quick points. 
  • Matthew True repeated his start from set one with another pair of kills boosting Cornerstone to a 6-3 lead. 
  • The Golden Eagles shifted formation giving Andrew Galanes some swings which he took full advantage of collecting two kills from Kyle Hortness as the home team continued to lead the set. 
  • The 2nd set proved to be a tight one as it was tied back and forth down the stretch until Indiana Tech gained a 21-18 lead looking to take a 2-0 match lead. 
  • Matthew True gathered another flurry of kills but the offense of the Warriors was too much to handle as Cornerstone dropped the set 25-22. 
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Indiana Tech – 16
  • Indiana Tech jumped out to an early 4-1 lead to open the 3rd set as it looked like they had a sweep on their mind. 
  • Cornerstone responded right away and went on their own run to bring the set back level at 5-5. 
  • Ethan Walker and Ryder Roberts stepped up big and aided the Golden Eagles on a massive run to take a 12-6 lead. 
  • The Golden Eagles continued to rely on the power of Matthew True as he earned another service ace and kill to add to the Cornerstone lead up 17-11. 
  • It only made sense for Matthew True to send Cornerstone into their first set victory of the night with a massive swing bringing Cornerstone back to a 2-1 match deficit.  
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Indiana Tech – 22
  • Cornerstone looked to build off their momentum from the 3rd set through Andrew Galanes who found two strong swings lead to a pair of kills and 3-2 lead. 
  • JeQuarri Shannon came to life when needed with his own pair of kills to keep Cornerstone close only down 9-8. 
  • The Matthew True show continued as he added three more kills and reached number 26 on the day beating his single game career high at the 15-15 mark in the fourth set. 
  • Braeden Schripsema and Andrew Galanes led the Golden Eagles to a 22-20 lead forcing an Indiana Tech timeout after a critical block and kill set up as Cornerstone had their eyes on a reverse sweep. 
  • Cornerstone forced another timeout as they stood one point away from a 5th set leading 24-21 late. 
  • The Golden Eagles finished their business thanks to a service error by the Warriors. 
Fifth Set: Cornerstone – 6 Indiana Tech – 15
  • The final set began with a Kyle Hortness ace to lead off the Golden Eagles. 
  • The stress inside Mol Arena continued as things were all tied at 4-4 with both teams looking to find a grip in the game. 
  • Indiana Tech went on a 4-0 run before the teams were forced to switch sides as they led 8-4 in full control of the 5thset. 
  • The Warriors came out with a service ace that was too hot to handle forcing the Golden Eagles to think things over. 
  • All the momentum continued to stay with the Warriors who held a 12-5 lead with Cornerstone using their second timeout of the set. 
  • Indiana Tech secured the final set win 15-6 after a five-set match. 
 
By The Numbers:
30 – Matthew True impressed Mol Arena with his single game high 30 kills in the loss to the Warriors.
500 – Andrew Galanes secured his 500th career assist in the match.
22/2 – Cornerstone also saw Kyle Hortness provide 22 assists and two service aces in the contest.  

What's Next?
Men's Volleyball has a short turnaround as they host Defiance College for Senior Day on Saturday, March 28th beginning at 2:00 p.m.
