Kokomo, Ind. – Women's Volleyball ends the tournament in Kokomo, Indiana with two wins on Saturday, sweeping Rio Grande and upsetting #12 IU-Kokomo in four sets.
Gabby VerBerkmoes led the way in both games with 24 kills and seven blocks over both games.
Aubrey Johnson had 20 kills with 26 digs while
Kaelyn Sohre shined in game two with nine kills and eight total blocks. Women's Volleyball is back in action on Wednesday, September 2nd as they return home and begin conference play with a match against Madonna set for 7 p.m.
Game Recap – #21 Cornerstone – 3 Rio Grande – 0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-16)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rio Grande – 12
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rio Grande – 13
- The second set started with three kills by Aubrey Johnson along with kills by Gabby VerBerkmoes and Gwyn VerBerkmoes to give Cornerstone an 8-5 lead.
- Rio Grande fought back and tied the second set at 13 with back-to-back errors by CU.
- Cornerstone scored four straight points after Rio Grand tied the game forcing them into a timeout.
- The Golden Eagles continued their run after the timeout scoring six-straight points with two service aces from Josilyn Potter and two kills by Gabby VerBerkmoes to make it 23-13 as Rio Grande called their second timeout.
- Gabby VerBerkmoes closed out the second set with a kill as Cornerstone scored 12 straight points to secure a win in the second set and take a 2-0 set lead.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rio Grande – 16

First Set: Cornerstone – 25 IU-Kokomo – 20
- The match began as a back-and-forth battle with the first set tied at four as CU had kills by Aubrey Johnson, Gwyn VerBerkmoes and Josilyn Potter.
- Cornerstone took a 10-6 lead with a kill by Gabby VerBerkmoes and errors by the Cougars.
- IU-Kokomo then tied the set at 12 with a block and an error by CU.
- The set stayed close as CU went up 17-15 with a kill by Aubrey Johnson, but the Cougars responded with three straight points to take an 18-17 lead.
- The Golden Eagled countered with five straight points with a from Aubrey Johnson, one solo block by Kaelyn Sohre and a block by Josilyn Potter and Kaelyn Sohre to give CU a 22-18 lead.
- Cornerstone closed out the first set with two kills from Josilyn Potter to take a 25-20 set one win.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 22 IU-Kokomo – 25
- The second set started with the Golden Eagles taking a 6-3 lead with kills by Kaelyn Sohre and Josilyn Potter along with blocks by Kaelyn Sohre, Aubrey Johnson and Josilyn Potter.
- IU-Kokomo battled back and tied the second set at eight.
- The set continued to be a back-and-forth battle as kills from Aubrey Johnson and Gabby VerBerkmoes tied the set at 12.
- A block by Josilyn Potter and Gabby VerBerkmoes put Cornerstone up by one, but the Cougars answered immediately to tie the set at 16.
- Cornerstone took two straight points to take a two-point lead and force the Cougars into a timeout.
- IU-Kokomo took the lead with three straight kills out of the timeout, which led to a timeout by the Golden Eagles.
- Cornerstone tied the set at 21 with a block by Aubrey Johnson and Kaelyn Sohre.
- The Cougars took the second set with two straight kills to tie the sets at one a piece.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 IU-Kokomo – 8
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 26 IU-Kokomo – 24
- The fourth set started as a back-and-forth battle, but Cornerstone took a 6-4 lead with a kill and a block by Gabby VerBerkmoes.
- IU-Kokomo took the lead with five straight points leading to a timeout by the Golden Eagles.
- Cornerstone tied the set at 12 with two straight kills by Kaelyn Sohre before a service by Aubrey Johnson retook the lead for the CU.
- The Golden Eagles continued to hold their one-point lead as two kills by Gabby VerBerkmoes and one by Josilyn Potter made it 17-16 CU.
- After IU-Kokomo took a 19-17 lead, Cornerstone fought back with the Cougars to take a 22-21 lead with a kill by Kaelyn Sohre.
- Cornerstone closed out the fourth set with a kill and a block by Gabby VerBerkmoes to secure a 26-24 set four win and take the match three sets to one.
