Women's Soccer Falls to RV Madonna in WHAC Opener

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Soccer drops their season opener 1-0 to receiving votes Madonna at home on Friday, September 18th. The Golden Eagles had multiple opportunities but could not capitalize on their 17 shots with eight being on goal. Gracie Gortmaker led CU with six total shots with three being on goal. Brooke Harmsen added two shots on goal while Corinne McGlassion kept Cornerstone close making seven saves. Women's Soccer will be back in action on Wednesday, September 23rd as they hit the road to face Michigan-Dearborn with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Game Recap: Cornerstone – 0 #RV Madonna – 1

First Half:
  • The match opened with a shot by the Crusaders that was sent wide right in the fourth minute of the match.
  • Cornerstone fired three shots in a row between the seventh and 11th minute from Brook Harmsen, Gracie Gortmaker and Jada VanNoord which were all saved by the Crusaders' keeper.
  • Madonna opened the scoring with a goal in the 15th minute to take a 1-0 lead over the Golden Eagles.
  • Gracie Gortmaker sent two more shots in the 21st and 23rd minute with the first shot saved by Madonna's keeper and the other went wide right.
  • Madeline Billings fired a shot on goal in the 28th minute which was saved by the Crusaders to hold their one goal lead.
  • Off a corner kick in the 32nd minute, Ally Merrihew sent a header on goal that was saved by the Madonna keeper.
  • A shot by Madonna in the 41st minute was saved by Corinne McGlassion to send the game into halftime with the Golden Eagles down one.
Second Half:
  • The second half started with a header by Gracie Gortmaker that went wide left in the 48th minute. 
  • Jada VanNoord followed with a shot of her own that was blocked by a Crusader defender.
  • In the 56th minute Gracie Gortmaker sent another shot towards the goal, this time missing high as the Golden Eagles trailed Madonna 1-0.
  • The Crusaders fired a shot of their own in the 58th minute which was saved by Corinne McGlassion to keep CU within one.
  • Addison Pell sent another shot towards the net for CU but missed wide right in the 60th minute.
  • Brooke Harmsen fired a shot on net in the 72nd minute which was saved by the Madonna keeper to keep CU down by one.
  • In the 86th minute Madie Smith sent a shot wide left of the goal as Cornerstone fought to tie the game.
  • Corinne McGlassion added another save in the 87th minute to keep the Golden Eagles hopes to tie alive.
  • In the 89th minute Madeline Billings sent a header towards the goal that missed wide left and that would seal the game for Madonna as CU fell 1-0.
