Fort Wayne, Ind. – Women's Volleyball fell to Indiana Tech in four sets for their first conference loss of the season.
Gabby VerBerkmoes led CU with 15 kills while
Aubrey Johnson had 12 kills and six digs.
Payton Hutchinson totaled 42 assists paired with two service aces with
Gianna Warwick leading Cornerstone with 29 digs. The Golden Eagles return home on Wednesday, September 30th as they host cross town rival #9 Aquinas for a WHAC matchup set to begin at 7 p.m.
Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 1 Indiana Tech – 3 (23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-27, 20-25)
First Set: Cornerstone – 23 Indiana Tech – 25
- The match began with Indiana Tech taking a 3-0 lead, but Cornerstone battled back with two kills by Josilyn Potter and a block by Potter and Gabby VerBerkmoes to make it 4-4.
- Indiana Tech retook the lead and ran getting out to a 12-7 lead over CU.
- Kills by Payton Hutchinson and Aubrey Johnson brought Cornerstone back within three making it 13-10.
- The Golden Eagles continued to keep it close with a kill by Gwyn VerBerkmoes and a service ace by Josilyn Potter put them within two.
- Three straight points for Cornerstone made it a 22-21 game in the first set with a kill by Aubrey Johnson and two errors by the Warriors.
- Despite getting within one, Cornerstone's comeback would fall short as the Warriors took set one 25-23.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Indiana Tech – 21
- The second set started with both teams trading points with Cornerstone getting a kill from Kaelyn Sohre and a block by Gabby VerBerkmoes and Gwyn VerBerkmoes to make it 5-5.
- Cornerstone continued to keep pace with the Warriors as a kill by Aubrey Johnson tied the set at nine.
- The Golden Eagles took the lead as two kills and a block by Gwyn VerBerkmoes paired with a kill by Gabby VerBerkmoes gave CU a 15-12 lead.
- Cornerstone continued to grow their lead as two kills by Aubrey Johnson gave CU a 21-17 lead.
- After calling a timeout, the Warriors scored three straight points to make it 23-20 and forced CU to call a timeout.
- Kills by Aubrey Johnson and Josilyn Potter secured the second set win for Cornerstone 25-21 as they even the sets at one.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 20 Indiana Tech – 25
- The third set saw Indiana Tech get out to an 8-3 lead over cornerstone forcing the Golden Eagles into an early timeout.
- Indiana Tech continued to grow their lead but two kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes helped CU inch closer.
- Cornerstone went on a five-point run with kills by Gabby VerBerkmoes and Kaelyn Sohre along with a block by Sohre and Payton Hutchinson to put CU within three.
- The Golden Eagles continued their run after the Warriors timeout with kills by Aubrey Johnson and Kaelyn Sohre paired with a service ace by Olivia Endris to put Cornerstone up 15-14.
- Indiana Tech regained the lead and took a 21-18 advantage over Cornerstone.
- Cornerstone fought back within one as Gabby VerBerkmoes recorded back-to-back kills and two errors by the Warriors made it 24-23.
- After tying the set at 24 and 25, Indiana Tech scored back-to-back points to take set three 27-25.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 20 Indiana Tech – 25
- The fourth set began with Indiana Tech scoring five straight points leading Cornerstone to take a timeout.
- Cornerstone came out of the timeout with five straight points of their own with two kills by Aubrey Johnson and a service ace by Payton Hutchinson.
- Indiana Tech regained the lead, but Cornerstone continued to keep it close with a kill by Kaelyn Sohre.
- The Warriors continued to grow their lead as two kills by Gabby VerBerkmoes brought CU within one, but Indiana Tech answered with three point to make it 16-12.
- Cornerstone continued to fight with a service ace by Gianna Warwick and kills by Josilyn Potter and Gabby VerBerkmoes as CU got within two.
- Indiana Tech finished the fourth set with three straight points taking a 25-20 win and handed Cornerstone their first conference loss.
