Women's Volleyball Ends the Weekend with Two Wins

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Volleyball ended the AQ/CU Tournament with two wins on Saturday, September 5th, beating Cumberland (TN) in four sets and sweeping Olivet Nazarene. Aubrey Johnson led CU in game one with 12 kills while also having 14 digs. Gabby VerBerkmoes had 11 kills in game two with Kaelyn Sohre recording four total blocks and Payton Hutchinson leading the offense with 33 assists. The Golden Eagles hit the road as they will face Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday, September 9th at 7 p.m.
 

Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 3 Cumberland (TN) – 1 (25-17, 25-11, 24-26, 25-20)
 
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Cumberland – 17
  • The match began with Cornerstone taking a 5-2 lead off a kill by Josilyn Potter and a block by Aubrey Johnson.
  • Cumberland fought back to within one, but a kill by Josilyn Potter and two bad sets put the Golden Eagles up 12-9.
  • Cornerstone continued to grow their lead as they went on an 8-1 run with two kills by Gwyn VerBerkmoes and Josilyn Potter who also added an ace to make it 20-11.
  • Three service errors by the Phoenix closed out the set and Cornerstone won set one 25-17.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Cumberland – 11 Third Set: Cornerstone – 24 Cumberland – 26
  • The third set saw Cornerstone take a 6-4 lead with a kill from Ally Kragt and a block by Gabby VerBerkmoes.
  • After Cumberland took the lead, Cornerstone responded with six-straight points with two kills from Aubrey Johnson to make it 13-9 in favor of Cornerstone.
  • Ally Kragt extended the Golden Eagles lead with two kills making it 18-13.
  • Cumberland went on a run to get within one, but Cornerstone got three points in a row with kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes and Gwyn VerBerkmoes.
  • The Phoenix rallied from down four with six-straight points to take set three 26-24.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Cumberland – 20
  • The fourth set began with Cornerstone taking an 8-4 lead with two kills by Aubrey Johnson and an ace by Gianna Warwick.
  • The Golden Eagles went on a seven-point run highlighted by three service aces by Josilyn Potter to make it 18-9.
  • Cumberland battled back to get within three with the help of a couple errors by the Golden Eagles.
  • Cornerstone secured the 25-20 set four win with two kills by Gwyn VerBerkmoes and took the match three sets to one.

  • The second set started with the Golden Eagles taking a 7-1 lead with two kills by Gwyn VerBerkmoes.
  • Olivet Nazarene rallied to get back in the set, but a kill from Gabby VerBerkmoes kept Cornerstone ahead by six.
  • The Golden Eagles made it 20-14 with two kills from Josilyn Potter and a block by Aubrey Johnson and Kaelyn Sohre.
  • Ava Ford closed out the second set with an ace to secure a 25-17 win in set two for Cornerstone.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Olivet Nazarene – 21
  • The third set saw Olivet Nazarene take a 6-4 lead over the Golden Eagles.
  • Cornerstone tied the set at ten with two kills by Gabby VerBerkmoes.
  • The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the set with a kill by Riley Pilat and another by Josilyn Potter which gave CU a 17-15 lead.
  • Riley Pilat and Gabby VerBerkmoes extended the Cornerstone lead to four with kills, inching the Golden Eagles closer to a sweep.
  • Aubrey Johnson secured the sweep for CU with two kills to finish set three with a score of 25-21.

 The Golden Eagles hit the road as they will face Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday, September 9th at 7 p.m.
