Schultz goes over 1,000 career kills in pair of wins

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone senior Cailie Schultz (SR/Rockford, Mich.) went over 1,000 career kills on Saturday afternoon as she led the Golden Eagles to a pair of wins in the Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic. Schultz finished with 30 kills in the pair of victories over Rochester and William Penn as the Golden Eagles now sit at 23-8 on the season. CU will return to action on Wednesday when they play No. 14 Davenport on the road.

Match 1 – Cornerstone 3, Rochester 0 (25-10, 25-8, 25-17)

Cailie Schultz got her big day going with an impressive match against the Warriors. The senior middle hitter posted 12 kills on 22 attempts with no errors for a .545 hitting percentage. Chelsea Lake (JR/Lake Odessa, Mich.) posted another double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs while Megan Newhouse (JR/Grand Haven, Mich.) matched Lake's double-double with her own of 11 kills and a match high 18 digs.

CU hit .337 for the match compared to a -.038 for the Warriors while the Golden Eagles posted six service aces led by a pair from Hope Leppink (FR/Holland, Mich.).

Match 2 – Cornerstone 3, William Penn 0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-12)

Needing 13 kills to reach the milestone, Cailie posted seven in the opening set, two more in the second and then early in the third hit the plateau and kept adding to it to finish with a match high 18. Hope Leppink finished with 32 assists while Amber Carmean (JR/Fruitport, Mich.) was tops with 12 digs.

Cornerstone continued their outstanding offensive day as they posted 41 kills while hitting at a .402 clip. CU finished with 5.0 team blocks and held their fourth straight opponent to less than .000 hitting.

Cornerstone will return to action on Wednesday, October 29 when they travel to cross-town foe Davenport for a 7 p.m. match. DU won the first meeting between the two Grand Rapids schools 3-1.
