Chelsea Lake reaches 1,000 kills in tourney win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Senior Chelsea Lake (SR/Lake Odessa, Mich.) became the eleventh player in school history to reach the 1,000 kill milestone as she led the Golden Eagles to a pair of sweeps to claim the 2015 AQ/CU Crossover title. The two victories for CU lift them to 22-8 on the season as they will resume WHAC play on Wednesday vs. crosstown rival Davenport at 7 p.m.



Match 1 - Cornerstone 3, Rochester 0 – 25-18, 25-12, 25-14

Chelsea Lake entered the opening match of the day needing only 10 kills to reach the 1,000 kill mark and the senior outside hitter collected 13 while leading CU to their third straight 3-0 victory at their home tourney. She was joined in double-figure kills by Megan Newhouse (SR/Grand Haven, Mich.) who finished with 13 as well.

Hope Leppink (SO/Holland, Mich.) led the team with 41 assists as Cornerstone hit .327 as a team. Newhouse led the defensive effort with 17 digs while Amber Carmean (SR/Fruitport, Mich.) and Chelsea Lake had 14 and 11 digs respectively.


Match 2 – Cornerstone 3, Point Park – 25-16, 25-17, 31-29

The Golden Eagles finished off their second straight perfect day with a sweep of the Pioneers from Point Park (Pa.). Cornerstone used strong runs in the middle of each set to claim the nine, eight and two point wins.

Leading the way on offense for CU was Chelsea Lake with 16 kills while Hope Leppink had 36 assists. CU had 12.5 team blocks as Kendra Zwart (FR/Jenison, Mich.) had eight and Johanna Egerer (SR/Plymouth, Wisc.) (4). 


Notes…
-    Chelsea Lake reached 1,000 kills in 396 sets played (3.96 kills per set)
-    Cornerstone won all 12 sets they played and joined Siena Heights and Aquinas in winning all four matches


Up Next?
Cornerstone will get back to league play on Wednesday when they welcome Davenport to Mol Arena for a 7 p.m. start.
