Volleyball comes back to defeat Davenport in five sets

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone and Davenport met for the second time this season and the result was the same as the first as the Golden Eagles finished a valiant comeback to defeat the Panthers in five sets. CU picks up its eighth straight win as they improve to 18-7 overall and 9-1 in the WHAC. The Golden Eagles will remain at home this weekend for the annual ACC Classic as they host four matches on Friday and Saturday.

Match Flow…

In their second 5-set match of the season with Davenport, Cornerstone won the second, fourth and fifth sets to post a season sweep of their rivals. DU won the opener 25-15 as CU struggled to get anything going while the Panthers hit almost .500 for the win.

Set two was controlled by the Golden Eagles but a late rally forced it go over 25 points as CU won 29-27. Heather Green connected on nine of her team-high 18 kills in the set while CU limited the Panthers to a .214 hitting percentage. DU then came back strong in the third to get a leg up with a 25-20 win.

Trailing 2-1 again for the second time this season against Davenport, the Golden Eagles built a slim lead early in the fourth and maintained it throughout with CU never trailing and they pulled out a 25-23 win. That momentum carried over into the 5th as CU built an 8-4 lead at the side-switch and increased it to as many as 11-4 forcing DU to use both timeouts. The Panthers put up a fight to get back to within 14-10 but a Kendra Zwart block ended the match for the season sweep.

Freshman Kenzie Engelsma came on strong throughout the match as she finished with a career high 17 kills, posting five in each of the second and third sets and then four in each of the final two sets.

Say What?
"Our fight shows how mentally tough we are! We never give up even when we are down and you don't see that often when you have such a young team. This mentally tough and tenacious attitude that we have will help us finish the season strong" – Junior Hope Leppink
