GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone fell behind on an own goal in the first half, got the equalizer from junior
Kevin Nimmo and then the game winner in the first overtime from
Josue Uquillas to post a 2-1 win over rival Aquinas. The victory lifts the Golden Eagles to 10-5-2 on the year and 6-2-2 in league action as they will conclude the regular season on Saturday at UM-Dearborn.
Game Flow
On a cold, rainy and windy night at the CU Soccer Stadium, the Golden Eagles fell behind in just the 9' when a cross from Aquinas ricocheted off a CU defender and into the back of the net for an own goal. CU did not let it faze them as they came right back less than 10 minutes later with a
Kevin Nimmo goal off a pass from
Regan Billings to knot up the score at 1-1.
That score remained until the end of regulation even after CU had a significant advantage in shots and shots on goal (that margin ended 21-5 overall and 10-5 on goal). Then with less than 30 seconds to play in the first overtime period,
Josue Uquillas took a deflected ball just outside of the box and beat the keeper in the upper left hand corner for the win.
Inside the Box
- Tyler Waterway finished with four saves in net to pick up the win
- Uquillas had eight shots to lead all players while Kyle Doornbos and Kevin Doornbos each had four
- The win keeps CU in line for a home playoff game
