ANN ARBOR, Mich. – For the first time since 2004, the Cornerstone Volleyball team has claimed the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular season title. The Golden Eagles, who share the title with Lourdes whom they tied in the standings, defeated Concordia in straight sets on Wednesday night to finish the regular season 30-7 overall and 15-1 in conference play. CU, winners of their last 20 matches, will host a WHAC Quarterfinal match on Wednesday, November 8 at 7 p.m.
Match Flow…
With a chance at claiming their first WHAC title since the 2004 campaign, the Cornerstone Volleyball team got off to a sluggish start as they fell behind 17-11 in the opening set. CU slowly chipped away at the lead and after a 4-0 spurt, had themselves a 22-21 lead that they eventually turned into a 25-22 victory.
That momentum was all they needed as they controlled the next two sets in dominating fashion by the scores of 25-14 and 25-10. CU finished the night hitting .494 which is a season high while limiting the Cardinals to .170.
The win is the 20
th consecutive for the Golden Eagles as they tie the Lourdes Gray Wolves at 15-1 in WHAC play. CU will now be off until next Wednesday in the WHAC Quarterfinals.
The title is the 5th in program history for Cornerstone as they also won the regular season title in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2004.
