No. 8 Men’s Hoops knocks off second straight Top-5 foe

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Michael McLaughlin banked in a 3-pointer with 0.5 seconds left to send the game into overtime and CU dominated the extra frame 13-7 to post their second straight win over an NAIA Top-5 ranked foe. The win over No. 5 Saint Francis (Ill.) lifts the Golden Eagles to 2-1 on the year as they will head to Huntington (Ind.) on Friday to take on the College of the Ozarks in the opening game of the Ness Bros' Hall of Fame Tourney.

Game Flow
In a game that never saw a lead of more than six, it came down to a last second banked three-pointer to force overtime. Michael McLaughlin went from his own end line after USF took a 3-point lead on a pair of FT's and hit a contested triple right in front of his bench to tie the game at 79 with 0.5 seconds to play. A Fighting Saints' triple was just short as time expired to win the game.

Cornerstone then seized control in the extra five minutes of play as they scored the first five points on a layup from Kyle Steigenga and a 3-point play from Sam Vander Sluis to lead 84-79. The closest USF got for the remainder of the IT was two but the foul shooting was perfect for the Golden Eagles (7-7) in those five minutes.

Saint Francis led by one at the break and it easily could have been three but a last second fade-away jumper from Steigenga cut the margin to 37-36 heading into the locker room. The teams traded leads 10 times in the closing 20 minutes to set up the dramatic final 75 seconds.

Say What?
"We battled and kept fighting even when things did not look like they would go our way. Give credit to Saint Francis as they hit some tough shots but our guys hung in there through the full 40 minutes and into OT" – Head Coach Kim Elders
