Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Early second half goal dooms men’s soccer in 1-0 loss

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A Cougar goal just 4:36 into the second half turned out to be the only tally of the match as the Cornerstone Men's Soccer team dropped their season opener 1-0 to Spring Arbor. The Golden Eagle, who had to move the match to FH Northern HS because of the storms earlier in the day, will look to get their first win of 2016 when they hit the road to Holy Cross (Ind.) on Wednesday.

Game Flow
In a very physical match that featured 36 total fouls and four yellow cards, it was the defenses that stood up to the challenge. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the opening half as CU mustered the lone shot on goal in the opening 45 but the Cougar keep notched the save.

Then, just 4:36 into the second half, SAU got on the board after a cross from the near sideline and after seeing the ball bounce around in the box, SAU's Mitchell Simon put it by CU's Nick Hopkins to put the Cougars up 1-0. Cornerstone did have a few good chances down the stretch to tie the match up with its best being a David Mutembezi free kick that stayed low until the last second when the SAU keeper made a diving save.
