GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone Volleyball suffered their first defeat of the 2016 campaign as they fell to Saint Francis (Ill.) but the Golden Eagles rebounded for a 5-set win over Bethel (Ind.) to finish the TCC/SXU Crossover with a 3-1 record. CU will resume play next weekend at the Labor Day Classic hosted by Bellevue (Neb.).
Match 1 – Saint Francis (Ill.) 3, Cornerstone 1 – 20-25, 26-24, 20-25, 21-25
The Golden Eagle offense struggled to get going in their first match of the day as they hit just .095 in the 4-set loss to the Saints. Each of the first two sets were tight until the late teens as each USF and CU posted wins.
Cornerstone was then unable to post a win in either of the next two as they fell by finals of 25-20 and 25-21.
Heather Green had a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs while
Mackenzie Vallad had 23 digs and
Hope Leppink 29 assists.
Match 2 – Cornerstone 3, Bethel (Ind.) 2 – 20-25, 25-11, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13
The Pilots came into the match having won their last two matches via sweeps and they carried that momentum into the one with CU taking the opening set 25-20. Cornerstone responded with a dominating effort in the second, winning 25-11.
The next two were about as even of sets as you can ask for as Bethel won 25-21 in the third, while the Golden Eagles won 25-20 in the fourth to set up a 5
th set.
After trailing 11-10, Cornerstone rallied to take five of the final seven points to post the 15-13 win.
Hope Leppink picked up a kill and the match was finished off by an overpass kill from
Heather Green. The junior outside hitter led the team with 17 kills while
Ellie Van Laar and
Maria Ma each had 13 int the win.
Notes…
- Cornerstone went 3-1 on the weekend, the same record it had the last time it played in this tourney (2014)
- The Golden Eagles hit just .179 on the weekend but averaged over 2.1 blocks per set
- CU won two 5-set matches after going 0-2 in 2015 in like matches
Up Next?
Cornerstone will head to Nebraska to take part in the Labor Day Classic hosted by Bellevue. CU will face Peru State and the host Bruins on Friday, September 2.
