GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone earned their first win of the season, 2-1 over Saint Xavier, with two second half goals on Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles improve to 1-3 on the year and will continue play at Trinity International on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Game Flow
CU controlled the ball for the majority of the game recording eight shots in the first half to Saint Xavier's zero.
Kevin Nimmo and
Garrett Nimmo both recorded late first half scoring chances, but failed to get the Golden Eagles on the board missing left on both shots.
The second half opened similarly to the first half as Cornerstone controlled much of the possession eventually leading to a
Regan Billings goal in the 55
' of the game to give CU a 1-0 lead. SXU then began to put the pressure on with a shot just inside the 18-yard box that was blocked beautifully by Cornerstone keeper
Tyler Waterway. A quick clearance off the block led to a
Kevin Doornbos breakaway that found the back of the net to make it 2-0. The Cougars responded with a goal of their own in the final minute resulting in a final score of 2-1.
