Baseball walks off in season opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A new era of Cornerstone Baseball got started today in a dramatic way with first year head coach Chuck Lowitzki and his team posting a walk-off victory on opening night. The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the eighth inning to tie Lawrence Tech and then got a Jonny Abbadusky RBI single in the ninth to defeat the Blue Devils 9-8. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m. at DeWitt Field.

Game Flow

The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start as they brought home a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on an Aaron Krupansky sac fly to score Abbadusky and a Jarod Burton RBI double in which Brady Eeles scored.

CU added to their lead in the third when Burton added his second RBI of the game. LTU then came back in a big way as they posted their first run, homerun and grand slam in program history in the fourth as they took a 4-3 lead on one swing. That was just the start of a see-saw affair as CU posted two runs in their half of the fourth on a 2-out, 2-RBI double from Jon Stewart.

That lead only held until the top of the fifth when LTU brought home four runs to take an 8-5 lead. CU then started to chip away at the lead as they scored one in the sixth and two in the eighth to set the scene for the dramatic ninth inning. Brady Volmering was the first to reach for CU with one out and then advanced to second on a walk to Stewart and then with two outs, Abbadusky singled to left field to drive in Volmering for the game winner.
