Baseball completes sweep of Lawrence Tech with two wins

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The bats stayed hot on the opening weekend of the 2017 season and the pitching was just as strong as Cornerstone completed a 3-game sweep of visiting Lawrence Tech. CU won the opener today 11-2 and followed with a 12-1 mercy win in eight innings in the nightcap. Cornerstone (3-0, 3-0 WHAC) will head to Madonna next weekend for a 3-game series against the Crusaders.

Game 1 – After scoring nine runs in Friday's season opener, the Golden Eagle bats picked up right where they left off highlighted by a 4-5 day from Aaron Krupansky. The sophomore also posted five RBI while Joe Corsten scored three runs and Jon Stewart a pair.

On the mound, transfer Kyle Herrick was strong over seven innings as he allowed two runs on two hits while striking out six in his debut in a Cornerstone uniform.

Game 2 – Lawrence Tech took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning but that would be all they could muster against CU starter Noah Reed as the transfer hurled six innings of 1-run baseball while allowing four hits and striking out seven. He was replaced in the seventh by Collin Young wo struck out two of the six batters he faced while allowing no runners.

At the plate, Brady Volmering was dominant as the junior went 3-4 with three runs scored, three RBI and his first homerun of the season. Jarod Burton scored four times in the contest and sophomore Chris O'Neil Jr. finished the game off with a bases-loaded clearing double in the bottom of the 8th for the 12-1 mercy rule win.
