Volleyball posts upset of No. 16 Madonna 3-1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Cornerstone volleyball team claimed their first win over Madonna since the 2011 season and Wednesday's victory over the No. 16 ranked Crusaders kept the Golden Eagles within one match of WHAC leader Lourdes. Cornerstone, now 15-7 overall and 6-1 in the WHAC, will conclude the week with a 1 p.m. home contest on Saturday against UM-Dearborn.

Match Flow…

Cornerstone fell behind early in the opening set and had to play catch-up for a majority of the time. Trailing 18-14, Cornerstone rallied to score six out of the next seven points for their first lead since 2-1 and then would go on to win 25-23 after Kendra Zwart had three straight kills to finish off the Crusaders.

Set two was dominated by the Golden Eagles as they hit .400 (13 kills on 30 attempts with one error) highlighted by five kills from Heather Green and four from Zwart. CU won going away 25-16 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. As good as CU was in the second, they went the opposite in the third as the Crusaders cut the lead in half with a 25-18 victory.

The fourth was back and forth the entire way as CU looked to close out the match. 13 ties and nine lead changes saw Cornerstone build a 16-13 lead only to see the Crusaders battle back to take a 22-21 edge to force CU into a timeout. A kill by Heather Green and an error from Madonna gave CU the lead right back and after three match point opportunities, Madison Herrema finally put it away with a roll shot kill to win 27-25.

Say What?
"It's never easy going against the winningest NAIA coach, Jerry Abraham. I am proud of our team in how they refused to give up. The team worked very hard in the off-season and its starting to show. They executed the game plan and adapted to changes. This win is not only important to the current team but the program and our alumni with the ongoing rivalry between Madonna and Cornerstone" Head coach Ryan Campbell
