No. 18 Volleyball picks up pair of wins at home tourney

Story Links

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone fell in their opening set tonight but rattled off six consecutive victories right after to pick up a pair of wins on the first day of the ACC Tourney, a tourney they co-host with Aquinas College. The two wins lift No. 18 CU to 18-6 on the year as they will resume play Saturday at 10 a.m. against Grace (Ind.) followed by a 1 p.m. match against Cumberlands (Ky.).

Match 1 – #18 Cornerstone 3, IU-South Bend 1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-10, 25-21)
The visiting Titans crawled back from a big hole in the opening set to win 25-22 but it was all Golden Eagles after that as they dominated the next two sets and held off a late comeback by IUSB in the fourth to claim the win.

Kendra Zwart and Heather Carlson combined for 27 kills while Hope Leppink had 38 assists and Madison Herrema 16 digs in the win.

Match 2 – #18 Cornerstone 3, Taylor 0 (25-4, 25-21, 25-17)
It was all Cornerstone in the opening set as the Golden Eagles held the Trojans to a -.259 hitting percentage with CU winning 25-4, their widest margin of victory this season. Sets two and three were much closer but the offensive output by the Golden Eagles was too much for Taylor.

CU finished with 42 kills in the 3-set win, led by 11 from Kendra Zwart and 10 from Heather Carlson. Leppink handed out 36 assists while Mackenzie Vallad was top with 14 digs.
