Defense lifts No. 18 Volleyball to sweep at Lourdes

SYLVANIA, Ohio – The No. 18 ranked Cornerstone Volleyball team picked up a big road win on Wednesday night as they completed a season sweep of division rival Lourdes with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-18 victory in Ohio. The win, their tenth straight, lifts the Golden Eagles to 23-6 on the year and 12-1 in the WHAC as they will close out the regular season with two matches inside Mol Arena starting Friday at 6 p.m. vs. Siena Heights.

Match Flow…

The first two sets were very similar as the teams traded side-outs for most of the first 15 points but it was a pair of big runs from CU that allowed them to win by six in the opener and five in the second set.

With LU leading 17-16 in the first set, Cornerstone went on a 6-0 run as they got two kills from Heather Carlson and one each from Hope Leppink and Ellie Van Laar. After Lourdes ended the run with two straight points, Van Laar and an attack error from LU closed out the opener.

Then in the second, leading 17-15, CU would score five of the next six points to take a 22-16 lead. The run was highlighted by more balanced offense and the strong blocking of Jackie Stanko.

Set four was all Cornerstone early as the Golden Eagles built a commanding 14-7 lead but the Gray Wolves did not back down as they rallied to get within two at 19-17. CU would then score three consecutive points on a kill by Stanko and a pair of LU hitting errors and they would go on to win the set 25-19.

Notes…
  • Kendra Zwart (10), Heather Carlson (9) and Jackie Stanko (9) led a balanced CU attack
  • Hope Leppink handed out 35 assists in the win
  • Mackenzie Vallad had 20 digs
  • CU put up 11.5 team blocks and held the Gray Wolves to a dismal .023 hitting %
  • The loss is the first ever for Lourdes inside the Ebeid Center in WHAC play
  • CU handed LU their first league loss at home since Nov. 1, 2014
  • The sweep is the first time LU has been swept at home since Sep. 21, 2013
