LIVONIA, Mich. – The Cornerstone Volleyball team is headed back to the WHAC Tournament title match thanks to a 3-0 win over Siena Heights on Friday evening. The win also clinches the conference's first automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament as it marks the second consecutive year and third trip in school history. CU will face Lourdes, who upset No. 16 Madonna last night, on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Livonia.
Match Flow…
The first set was back and forth between the Saints and Golden Eagles until an 8-0 run by Cornerstone put them up 21-12 as they never looked back, eventually winning 25-14.
The second set was all Cornerstone from the early going as they took a 6-5 deficit and turned it into a 16-6 lead thanks to a strong serving rotation from
Mackenzie Vallad. The Golden Eagles held the SHU offense in check as they took a commanding two sets to none lead with the 25-10 victory.
After a pep talk in the hallway from head coach Kim Berrington, the Saints came out on fire to open the third set as they raced out to a 6-1 lead forcing CU into a timeout. The Golden Eagles responded with 10 of the next 14 points to take their first lead at 11-10 and they held a slim 2-3 point lead into the high teens. Cornerstone then closed out SHU with a 7-1 run as they claimed the sweep with a 25-17 win.
