GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles held on to earn a 99-92 overtime victory over Concordia to move to 2-0 in conference play this season. CU withstood a 19-point comeback by Concordia to get the win, as six different Cornerstone players scored in double figures. Cornerstone is now 4-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play as they will take 10 days off for Thanksgiving break before taking on Aquinas on November 28.
Game Flow
Cornerstone came out firing offensively, scoring their first 18 points inside the paint to get out to a 29-16 lead after one quarter of play.
Jesse Sheridan then began to take over the second quarter, scoring seven of her nine first half points in the period to help CU earn a game high 19-point lead at 47-28. Concordia then went on a 4-0 run to end the half that cut the deficit to 47-32 at halftime. The Golden Eagles had three players tied for a team high nine points at the half in
Jesse Sheridan,
Cass Vredevoogd, and
Shaina DenBesten.
Concordia began to chip away in the second half, going on a 15-2 run to end the third period and cut the deficit to just five points. In the fourth the Cardinals managed to go on an 8-0 run to take a 75-70 lead over the Golden Eagles. CU was down by three with just 1:35 remaining, when
Taylor Richards hit a layup to cut it to just one.
Sydney Muller then got to the line with 59 seconds remaining and hit one of two to tie it at 79 and bring the game to OT.
CU hit CUAA early in the overtime with five straight points from
Jesse Sheridan to get on top 84-79. Concordia was never able to come back from the early OT deficit forcing them to foul to try to stay in the game. A 13-14 clip at the free throw line by the Golden Eagles prevented any chance of a comeback by the Cardinals, as they earned a 99-92 overtime win.
