Baseball swept by Saint Francis on final day of spring trip

LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. – The Golden Eagles ended their 12 game stretch in the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational with a pair of losses to Saint Francis of Indiana. The offense struggled as CU fell 11-1 in game one, and 3-2 in game two on a Saint Francis walk off sacrifice fly. The 8-16 Cornerstone will have a quick turn around with a game at Spring Arbor on Tuesday when they return to the mitten.

Game 1 – Cornerstone got on the board first in game one, as Jon Stewart hit an RBI double that scored Gabe Zeiger to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Saint Francis responded right away though, when USF hit a HR to left center to tie the game at 1-1.

Clay Keltner pitched well through the first four innings, but the Cougars found offense in the fifth, scoring eight in the inning to get out to a 9-1 lead. Saint Francis added one in the sixth and seventh to earn an 11-1 victory. Cornerstone was unable to find any offense off the USF starter Kyle DeKoninck who went six innings giving up just four hits while striking out two.

Game 2 – The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start, as Brady Eeles led the game off with a triple. The next batter Jonny Abbadusky then grounded out to bring in Eeles and give CU a 1-0 lead. Saint Francis then tied the game with an RBI single in the second inning.

Both pitchers shined in this one, as neither offense could find ways to get on base. Freshman Daniel Abbgy went 4 innings strong for the Golden Eagles in his first career start, as his day ended after an RBI single in the fourth that gave Saint Francis the 2-1 lead. A clutch hit by Chris O'Neill then tied the game in the sixth at 2-2, but USF was able to get men on base in the bottom of the seventh and walk off on a sacrifice fly that scored David Snider to give them a 3-2 victory.
