GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles used a well-rounded performance to earn a pair of wins over Aquinas, 13-10 in game one and 10-1 in game two. The pair of wins ends a four game losing streak for Cornerstone and improve their record to 10-17 overall and 5-6 in the WHAC. CU will continue conference action with a double-header vs. Indiana Tech on Tuesday, followed by a double-header vs. Cleary on Wednesday.
Game 1 – An RBI double by
Evan Wagner and RBI single by
Chris O'Neill Jr. got CU off to a fast start in the first inning giving them a 2-0 lead. Aquinas was then able to respond with three straight runs to take a 3-2 lead. A pair of homeruns by
Levi Martin and
Jonny Abbadusky then sparked the Golden Eagle offense once again, giving them a 5-3 lead in the fifth.
Cornerstone then went to the bullpen when
Collin Young got into some trouble in the sixth, and Aquinas again was able to tie the game at 5-5. CU then exploded to secure a huge lead with seven runs in the seventh, highlighted by 2 RBI hits from
Jonny Abbadusky and
Joe Corsten. The Golden Eagle bullpen was able to do enough at that point to hold off the AQ comeback and earn the 13-10 win in game one.
Game 2 –
Clay Keltner shined in game two for the Golden Eagles, pitching 7.0 innings and not giving up a hit. Unfortunately pitch count forced a change for CU and
Noah Reed, who also pitched strong, gave up two hits and one run to the Saints.
The offense for CU once again shined, doing most of their damage in the later innings. After holding a 1-0 lead through the first four innings,
Jon Stewart recorded one of his four RBI on the day on a single that scored
Aaron Krupansky to take a 2-0 lead. CU then continued to add runs to get the score up to 10-0, highlighted by a two run bomb from
Jarod Burton. AQ scored in the ninth to avoid a shutout, resulting in a 10-1 Golden Eagle win in game two.
