GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles were unable to find the offense needed to earn victories vs. the no. 24 ranked Indiana Tech Warriors, as they fell 10-1 and 5-2 on the day. The losses moves Cornerstone's record to 10-19 overall and 5-8 in conference play this season. CU will be back in action right away, as they will host non-conference opponent Cleary University on Wednesday for a double-header starting at 2 p.m.
Game 1 – The ranked Indiana Tech Warriors got off to a quick start in game one, scoring three runs in the first inning off of three hits to get out to the early lead. From there, the Warriors continued to add runs slowly throughout, scoring runs in seven of the nine innings to get out to a 10-0 lead.
Cornerstone was able to find opportunities to score, but left nine guys on base throughout the game that resulted in a 10-0 deficit. CU did muster up one run in the ninth inning when
Jon Stewart hit an RBI single that scored
Brady Volmering to make the final score 10-1 in game one.
Game 2 – Game two was a classic pitching duel, as neither team was able to score until the seventh inning.
Noah Reed was on the hill and was flawless, as he did not give up a run until the seventh inning when IIT was able to break the scoring drought when a wild pitch scored a runner from third, giving them a 1-0 lead. The Warriors were then able to get one more run off Reed in the eighth on an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Indiana Tech then added insurance in the ninth, scoring three runs on four hits to get out to a 5-0 lead. CU was then able to get into the Indiana Tech bullpen in the bottom of the ninth and provide a bit of a scare to the Warriors, as
Joe Corsten hit a bases loaded single that scored two to cut the deficit to 5-2. Josh Wiesman then came in to pitch for IIT, and he got the final two outs to hold Cornerstone off in a 5-2 final.
Quotable…
"There were times we didn't get the big hit we needed, we did not execute the way we needed to in order to win these games. The few times we did execute, it was a team effort where guys got on base and I was fortunate enough to be in a situation to hit them in. We are ready to come back out tomorrow and execute better offensively." –
Joe Corsten, third baseman
