GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles took on the Cleary University Cougars for a pair of seven-inning games Wednesday afternoon, and the young CU pitchers helped earn a pair of wins 3-1 and 4-0. The wins help Cornerstone rebound from a two game losing streak, moving their record to 12-19 on the year. Cornerstone will take on WHAC opponent Rochester College on Friday and Saturday with the location of those games yet to be determined.
Game 1 – Cornerstone got on the board first in game one, after Chris O'Neill earned a two out walk that then scored pinch runner
Gabe Zeiger on a
Joe Corsten RBI single in the bottom of the first. That was all the offense we had early in this one, as freshman
Zach Brog held the Cougar offense scoreless until the fifth inning when Cleary tied the game on an RBI single.
CU then quickly responded, scoring two in the sixth on a pair of sacrifice flies by
Brady Eeles and
Chris O'Neill Jr. that gave them a 3-1 lead. Freshman
Daniel Abbgy pitched the final two innings for the Golden Eagles and did not give up a run to earn his first collegiate win, 3-1.
Game 2 – Game two was similar to game one in that neither team could find offense against the stellar pitching of Cornerstone starter Alan Labov and Cleary starter Ryan Schaffer. The first run did not score until the bottom of the fourth inning, when
Brady Eeles hit his second sacrifice fly of the day to score
Brady Volmering and take a 1-0 lead.
Cornerstone then added some insurance runs in the fifth and the sixth with a
Jonny Abbadusky RBI triple, and an
Evan Wagner 2 RBI single to bring lead to 4-0.
Nick Hill,
Brady Eeles, and
Aaron Krupansky all saw an inning in relief after Alan Labov went four scoreless innings on his way to his first collegiate win, 4-0.
