WINTERHAVEN, Fla. – The Golden Eagles earned a pair of thrilling victories, winning against Cleary 7-6 in game one on an
Evan Wagner walk off and 7-3 in extra innings in game two. Cornerstone is now 7-9 on the year, as they get set to take a day off before returning to Winterhaven for a double-header vs. Judson University on Monday.
Game Flow
Game 1 – Cornerstone once again found themselves scoring runs early on, as they got off to a 2-0 lead with a single by
Joe Corsten and Chris O'Neill that scored
Aaron Krupansky and
Jarod Burton. Cleary was able to get one back in the second to cut the Cornerstone lead to 2-1. The Golden Eagles then found some insurance in the fourth and fifth innings scoring four runs highlighted by a deep 2 RBI double by
Seth Reigner to gain a 6-1 advantage.
Cornerstone was unable to hold on to a 6-1 lead as Cleary managed to make a comeback in the fifth and sixth, scoring five runs to tie it at 6-6.
Evan Wagner was the hero though in the end, as he hit a walk off single in the bottom of the seventh to score
Gabe Zeiger and earn a 7-6 win.
Game 2 – Game two was just as much of a thrill as game one, as it was a pitching duel throughout with neither pitcher giving up a run until the fourth inning when CU got three runs and Cleary got two.
Nick Hill came in to hold the Golden Eagle lead and did just that going 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit.
Cornerstone looked to have this one all wrapped up, but a bottom of the seventh game-tying run by Cleary brought this game into extra innings. The Golden Eagles did not let the late run by Cleary phase them though, as
Evan Wagner once again was the hero scoring the run that took the lead off of a Cleary error. Cornerstone then added insurance with
Brady Eeles 2 RBI singe and
Jarod Burton RBI single to take a 7-3 lead.
Aaron Krupansky then returned to the mound for the bottom of the eighth to earn the win.
