WINTERHAVEN, Fla. – Junior
Kyle Herrick went a complete game, allowing just five hits, to help the Golden Eagles on their way to a split on Thursday afternoon. Cornerstone defeated Saint Xavier 9-1 in game one before being held scoreless in a 2-0 loss in game two. CU will look to build on their 8-14 overall record with a double-header vs. Saint Francis (Ind.) tomorrow that will conclude the Golden Eagles spring break trip in Florida.
Game 1 – Pitching was dominant early in game one as both
Kyle Herrick and Saint Xavier starter Jarod Jones allowed a total of just one hit through the first two innings. The second time through the rotation, CU was able to find when
Jonny Abbadusky hit an RBI single to score
Joe Corsten in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Cornerstone continued to score throughout the rest of the game getting out to a 5-0 lead through the first five innings. The Golden Eagles then added three more runs in the seventh on a pair of RBI walks by
Levi Martin and
Joe Corsten along with a
Jon Stewart RBI single to take a 9-0 lead.
Kyle Herrick was phenomenal throughout, throwing a complete game and allowing just one run in the seventh to earn a 9-1 win and move to 2-2 on the year.
Game 2 – Offense's were struggling in game two as both starting pitchers allowed a combined seven hits. The difference was a single and a ground out by Saint Xavier in the third inning that gave SXU a 2-0 lead.
Noah Reed got out of multiple jams throughout his four-inning outing, but the Cougars got his pitch count up, forcing an early pitching change.
Nick Hill kept the game at just 2-0 in the final three innings, allowing just two hits, but a pair of leftie throwers for Saint Xavier shut down the Golden Eagle offense leading them to a shutout victory for a series split on the day.
