GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – No April Fools joke here as the Cornerstone Baseball team really did play a triple header on Saturday afternoon and the Golden Eagles took all three contests from the visiting Rochester College Warriors. CU won the opener 3-1, the second game 14-0 and finished it with a 9-5 win in the nightcap. The three wins lift CU to 15-19 overall and 8-8 in league play as they will travel to Bethel College (Ind.) on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader.
Game 1 – The game was dominated by the starting pitching and Cornerstone's
Collin Young was nearly unhittable as the sophomore finished with a complete game 1-hitter while allowing only one run.
Jarod Burton got the scoring started with an RBI single in the first that scored Aaron Krupnansky to take a 1-0 lead.
CU then followed with single runs in each of the next two innings as
Brady Eeles and
Joe Corsten picked up RBI's that scored
Jon Stewart and
Jonny Abbadusky. Rochester did get one run in their half of the fifth as they picked up with their lone hit of the contest.
Game 2 – The Cornerstone bats came alive in the middle game as they put up 14 runs on 13 hits and pitched a shutout in the process. The Golden Eagles scored two in the first inning and followed with two in the fourth, six in the fifth and four in the sixth.
Clay Keltner was solid on the mound for CU as he went six innings while only allowing a pair of hits and striking out four. The offense had his back from the onset as Corsten brought home Krupansky and Eeles in the first inning and then
Jon Stewart connected on his first of two triples on the day that scored
Gabe Zeiger in the fourth. Eeles followed with an RBI groundout to bring home Stewart to put the Golden Eagles up 4-0.
The big damage came in the fifth when CU plated six runs as they got RBI's from
Adam Harvey, Stewart, Eeles, Krupansky,
Brady Volmering and
Evan Wagner.
Game 3 – Cornerstone took the upper-hand in the final game of the day when
Jon Stewart cleared the bases with a 3-RBI triple in the bottom of the second inning to put CU up 3-0. The junior second baseman then came up with another clutch hit in the fourth after the Warriors evened up the score at three. Stewart brought home
Jarod Burton and
Brady Volmering on a single and CU never relinquished the lead.
Chris O'Neill plated Stewart to add to the lead in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-3. Cornerstone then added three more in the bottom of the sixth on a
Brady Volmering 2 RBI single and a
Jarod Burton RBI single. Rochester was able to get two more runs in the top of the seventh, but
Noah Reed shut down the comeback to win 9-5.
