GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The bats got hot at the right time for head coach
Chuck Lowitzki and the CU Baseball team as they posted a pair of mercy-rule wins over Siena Heights to complete the 3-game sweep. The two victories lift Cornerstone to 19-23 overall and 11-11 in the WHAC as they are tied in the standings with the Saints. CU will return to action next Friday at Marygrove.
Game 1 – Cornerstone struck early with a
Brady Eeles run in the first inning on an RBI groundout by
Jarod Burton. That lead grew to 6-0 in the third as CU took advantage of four free-passes and an RBI single from Burton and bases clearing double from
Aaron Krupansky.
CU tacked on five more in the sixth to lead 11-0 and the frame was highlighted by another bases clearing double, this time from
Joe Corsten and it looked as if CU would close out the Saints in the top of the seventh behind starter Colling Young. After getting the first two outs on just three pitches, Young allowed the next three to reach and CU would go on to allow four in the frame.
The Golden Eagles quickly struck back with three runs in the bottom of the inning, finished off by a walk-off single from Corsten to complete his 4-RBI game.
Game 2 – CU again struck quickly with a pair of runs in the opening inning as
Jonny Abbadusky doubled and was brought home by Burton who was then brought home by Chris O'Neill. SHU got their bats going much earlier in the nightcap as they struck for four runs in their half of the second to lead 4-2.
After CU got one back in the third, the Saints got a solo home run in the fifth for a 5-3 lead but it was all Cornerstone after that as they scored three in each of the next two innings and finished it with seven in the bottom of the seventh for their second straight mercy-rule win.
Evan Wagner (4),
Joe Corsten (3), Chris O'Neill (3),
Jonny Abbadusky (2) and
Jarod Burton (2) all finished with multiple RBI in the nightcap.
Clay Keltner recovered from the poor second inning to go six innings while allowing the five runs to pick up his third win of the season
