DETROIT, Mich. – The Golden Eagles hit the road for the first time since April 4
th and managed to salvage a split against WHAC opponent Marygrove College. CU could not find their stride offensively in game one losing 2-1, but they quickly turned that around putting up 15 runs in a 15-7 game two victory. Cornerstone is now 20-24 on the year and 12-12 in conference play, as they will remain in Detroit to play a single nine-inning game vs. the Mustangs tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Game One – Pitching was the story of game one as both
Kyle Herrick and opposing pitcher Daniel Bailey went complete games, allowing a total of just ten hits and three runs between them. Marygrove drew first blood, getting their only runs of the game on a two run homerun by Chase Younkin to take a 2-0 lead. Herrick then shut down the Marygrove offense, striking out eight in 8.0 innings pitched.
The CU offense saw their own offensive struggles, as they were unable to score through the first five innings against the Mustangs starter Daniel Bailey. Cornerstone did see a run score in the sixth on a
Joe Corsten sacrifice fly that plated
Evan Wagner to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Golden Eagles were unable to find any other offense in the final three innings resulting in a 2-1 loss.
Game Two – Game two was a much different story as the Golden Eagles offense irrupted early, scoring in each of the first six innings to put 15 runs on the board. Some highlights of the Golden Eagles offense include a second inning two RBI double by
Brady Eeles, a third inning two RBI homerun by
Jon Stewart, and a fifth inning two RBI double by
Evan Wagner.
Starting pitcher
Collin Young gave up just one run in five innings pitched, as CU looked like they were on their way to a mercy rule seven-inning win up 15-1 after five innings. Marygrove did not let that happen though as they managed to score six runs off of
Clayton Coatney who made his first appearance as a Golden Eagle in the nightcap, bringing the score to 15-7. The freshman pitching duo of
Daniel Abbgy and
Alan LaBov then ended the Mustangs comeback, not allowing another run to make the final score 15-7.
