Baseball falls 8-1 in first game of series vs. Davenport

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles offense was stifled against receiving votes Davenport University, as the Panthers earned an 8-1 victory over Cornerstone in game one of a three game series. CU now falls to 22-25 on the year and 13-13 in the WHAC, as they will return to action tomorrow for a double-header vs. Davenport that will feature the senior day celebration and the Love for Lana Cancer Game.

Game Flow – Davenport was able to get on the board first in the second inning on a Jake Bozzo homerun to take a 1-0 lead. The Panthers then added a second run on a bases loaded walk, as they drew five walks from starter Kyle Herrick. Cornerstone saw their only offense in the bottom of the fourth on a Jonny Abbadusky solo homerun to cut the DU lead to 2-1.

Once the fifth inning hit, the high powered Davenport offense began to figure out the starting pitcher Kyle Herrick, scoring three runs to take a 5-1 lead and force Herrick out of the game after just 4.1 innings pitched. Brett Shure then came in and pitched, not giving up any runs until the ninth inning, when the Panthers added three more to get up 8-1. CU could not figure out the duo of starting pitcher Grant Wolfram and reliever Jonathan Cheshire, who combined to give up a total of just three hits, resulting in an 8-1 loss for the Golden Eagles.
