GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles celebrated senior day and their Love for Lana Cancer Game, but were unable to walk off the field with a win as they lost 8-0 and 4-1 to rival Davenport University. Cornerstone now drops to 22-27 and 13-15 in the WHAC, as they will enter their final regular season series of the year next week Thursday and Friday at Lourdes.
Game 1 – Cornerstone could not get anything going in game one vs. receiving votes Davenport getting shutout by the pitching trio of Andrew Click, Jonathan Cheshire, and Justin Palmbos. The Golden Eagles kept it close through the first five innings, as the Panthers were only able to score two runs on starting pitcher
Clay Keltner through the first five innings.
Once Davenport got to the sixth inning, they were able to force
Clay Keltner out of the game and get to the Golden Eagles bullpen, where they scored six more runs (five in the sixth, and one in the seventh) to get out to an 8-0 lead. The CU offense was able to muster up six hits, but could not bring any of them around, leaving a total of eight runners on base.
Game 2 – Neither team could find much of an offense to start game two, as one run scored throughout the first six innings of play on a Davenport sacrifice fly. Cornerstone starting pitcher
Collin Young was outstanding through the first six innings, giving up just eight hits and one earned run.
The Panthers finally did get to the starter
Collin Young in the seventh, scoring two runs on a Brian Sobieski two RBI double that gave DU a 3-0 lead. CU found their only offense of the day in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single by freshman
Brady Eeles to cut Davenport's lead to 3-1. The Panthers immediately got that run back though in the top of the eighth off the new pitcher
Noah Reed, giving them a 4-1 victory in the series finale.
