GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Senior
Evan Wagner helped put three of the Golden Eagles five runs on the board in today's double-header, as no. 13 Northwestern Ohio was just too much for Cornerstone to handle, losing 11-0 and 8-5. Cornerstone is now 16-23, 8-11 WHAC this season as they will host Siena Heights for a crucial three game series on Thursday and Saturday of the upcoming week.
Game 1 – No. 13 UNOH did what they do best in game one, scoring early and often on CU starter
Clay Keltner, scoring six runs in the first three innings to take a 6-0 lead.
Nick Hill then came in as relief and the Racers did not let up, scoring four more in the fifth and one in the sixth to get out to an 11-0 lead.
Northwestern Ohio starter Kyle Thomas went a complete game stifling the Golden Eagle hitters giving up just three hits, with two of those coming off the bat of
Jonny Abbadusky. The CU pitching staff allowed a total of 15 hits to the power offence of the Racers, resulting in an 11-0 seven-inning loss.
Game 2 – The Northwestern Ohio offense once again got off to a hot start, scoring six runs in the first three innings that was highlighted by a two RBI homerun by Jeff Cardenas. The relief pitching of
Noah Reed and
Daniel Abbgy then came in and limited the UNOH damage while the Cornerstone offense finally hit its stride and was able to score some runs.
CU responded to a 6-0 deficit with two runs in the fifth on a
Brady Eeles two RBI triple to cut the UNOH lead to 6-2. Northwestern Ohio then got the lead up to 7-2 in the seventh before
Evan Wagner hit a homerun to cut the deficit back to just four. Again the Racers responded with a run to make it 8-3, but
Evan Wagner went yard for the second time on a two RBI homerun that brought the deficit to just three runs. CU could not make any more magic happen though, as they ultimately fell 8-5 in game two.
