GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles began their 2017-18 season with an 8-1 non-conference victory over East Beltline foe Calvin College. In what seemed much like an exhibition game with a lot of substitutions, CU got a victory to give them a 1-0 record on the year. Cornerstone will continue their fall season with a conference series at Lawrence Tech this weekend.
Game 1 – Cornerstone starter
Kyle Herrick was rolling through the Calvin lineup early in this one. The only run that the Golden Eagles gave up came in the third inning on a sacrifice fly that scored a runner that previously reached base on a Cornerstone error.
In the sixth, CU found their offense scoring five runs that was highlighted by a bases clearing triple by
Gabe Zeiger giving the Golden Eagles a 5-1 lead.
Collin Young worked the third through sixth inning on the mound and held the Knights scoreless, while striking out three to hold the 5-1 lead.
The Cornerstone offense was able to add a run in the seventh on a
Jon Stewart fielder's choice that scored
Trenton Gilman to go up 6-1. CU then added another two runs in the eighth on a
Dustin DeBeau 2 RBI single, bringing the final to 8-1.
