GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Madonna struck early with two runs in the first inning and they put up at least one in six of their nine at bats to down the host Golden Eagles 9-2 on Friday night. The loss drops Cornerstone to 3-2 on the year and 2-2 in the league while the two teams will be back at De Witt Field on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Game 1 –The opener of a 3-game series in Grand Rapids saw the Golden Eagles post an 8-7 advantage in the hit category but the visiting Crusaders made CU pay on a trio of errors as they piled up nine runs, including scoring in six of the nine innings.
MU grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first two innings only to see CU chip away with two of their own in the third as
Brady Eeles doubled home
Jon Stewart and then
Jarod Burton singled Eeles home to cut the deficit to 3-2.
That would be all the offense CU could muster against the Crusader starter Taylor Turner as he improved to 2-0 after hurling 8.0 innings of 2-run ball while striking out five.
