Game Recap: Baseball | | @n_jcamp

Baseball swept by Spring Arbor in spring opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a rare February regular season doubleheader, the Cornerstone Baseball team fell victim to a big inning in a game one loss before falling again to Spring Arbor in the nightcap. The pair of setbacks drop the Golden Eagles to 3-6 overall as the two teams will play another pair of 7-inning games on Saturday beginning at Noon. Live stats will be provided for both contests.

Game 1 – Cornerstone controlled most of the game with the exception of a poor second inning that saw the Cougars score seven runs, five of them unearned off CU starter Kyle Herrick. The seven runs came on the heels of CU grabbing a 1-0 lead on a Joe Corsten RBI single that scored Brad Eeles in the first at bat for the Golden Eagles.

CU then started to chip away at the lead as they scored one in the fourth and fifth innings on a second RBI from Corsten and RBI single from Jon Stewart. The margin continued to decrease in the sixth when Brandon Hepp and Eeles each scored on a wild pitch and Trevor Bastien hit a SAC fly to score Stewart.

That would be all CU could get as the comeback fell one run short and the Cougars took the 7-6 win.

Game 2 – Spring Arbor took the momentum from the game one win and scored four runs in the opening frame off CU starter Collin Young. They added one more in the second for a commanding 5-0 lead before CU came back with two runs in the second on a Brandon Hepp sac fly and Brady Volmering run off a SAU error.

The Cougars then started to pile it on in the top of the third when they scored three in that inning, followed by four more in the next to go up 12-3. CU would cut into the lead in the sixth inning as Hepp scored on a wild pitch and Zack Meyer doubled home Jon Stewart.

That would be all the Golden Eagles would get though, falling 12-5 to SAU in the nightcap to go 0-2 on the day.
