GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A four run first inning by the Saints doomed the Golden Eagles in game one of a three game series this weekend. The Cornerstone bats fell silent recording just four hits in a 7-1 loss to Aquinas. CU is now 12-14 on the year and 3-10 in WHAC play as they will continue action with a double-header against AQ tomorrow starting at 1 p.m.
Game Flow - The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start, as starter Collin Young couldn't find the strike zone early. Aquinas made Young pay for the early mistakes with a three RBI triple from Mitchell Weber to take a 3-0 lead. AQ then added one more run in the first to hold a 4-0 lead at the completion of the inning. Cornerstone would get their only run in the bottom of the second on a Trevor Bastien sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 4-1.
Aquinas would add two more runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a solo home run from Nick Brzezinski to make the score 6-1. Cornerstone would then be forced to go to the bullpen, where Zach Brog would enter and pitch five innings allowing just one run and two hits making the score 7-1 in favor of Aquinas.
Cornerstone could not get the bats going though, as Aquinas starter Max Ludka pitched 8.0 with zero earned runs and seven K's to help the Saints to a 7-1 win over the Golden Eagles.
