GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles hosted a conference doubleheader against cross-town rival Aquinas on Friday afternoon. The Saints came out on top 4-2 in extra innings in the first game before the Golden Eagles rallied for a big 13-7 win in the nightcap. Cornerstone will be back in action next weekend with a series at Rochester College.
Game 1 – Aquinas, after posting a dominant 7-1 victory on Thursday, the Saints got on the board first in their first at-bat as they used some small ball on CU starter Kyle Herrick. Aquinas then added a second run in the next frame to go up 2-0. Herrick would eventually settle in to shut down AQ the rest of his day, leaving in the seventh after allowing just the two runs (one earned) on six hits.
The Cornerstone bats awoke in the 5th inning when Zack Meyer got the frame started with a single before Eric Bradberry doubled down the right field line. After an Aaron Krupansky walk loaded the bases with just one out, CU got an RBI single from Brady Eeles and RBI groundout from Trevor Bastien to knot the score at 2-2.
Neither offense would score again until the 11th inning when AQ scored two thanks to a couple Cornerstone errors to give the Saints a 4-2 lead. Cornerstone would go down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 11th to fall 4-2 in game one.
Game 2 – The Saints jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the Golden Eagles responded with a pair of their own in the bottom of the inning. Gabe Zeiger led off a five-run inning for CU with a triple to the gap in left-center. Joe Corsten had a 2-RBI single in that big inning, then added a 2-RBI double in the 3rd inning and an RBI single in the 7th inning.
Aquinas cut the deficit to 13-7 in the 8th inning and loaded the bases in the 9th inning, but Jon Martin tallied two strikeouts to put the game away.
Noah Reed pitched five innings while allowing only four hits and one earned run. He struck out nine batters, one short of his career-high.
