LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. – The Golden Eagles got off to a great start on their spring break trip to Florida, winning 7-6 and 12-8 in a double-header vs. Mount Vernon Nazarene. With the wins, the Golden Eagles are now 7-6 on the year as they will take a day off before picking up Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational action vs. Grace College (Ind.) on Monday.
Game 1 – Mount Vernon Nazarene would get on the board first, scoring in the first inning on an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. The game would then get into a pitching duel as
Collin Young and MVNU starter Adam Goodpaster would not allow another until the fourth inning. MVNU would score to make it 2-0 before Cornerstone then tied it on a 2 RBI double by
Jon Stewart.
Cornerstone then irrupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a pair of triples from
Gabe Zeiger and
Jon Stewart that scored four of the five CU runs to go up 7-2.
Collin Young would find himself in trouble in the top of the sixth, loading the bases without recording an out, but
Daniel Abbgy would come in to hold the 7-2 lead. Bullpen arms would struggle in the top of the seventh, but
Jon Martin would record the save as CU earned a 7-6 game one win.
Game 2 – The Cougars would get off to a fast start against pitcher
Noah Reed, scoring two in the first on a wild pitch and an RBI double. CU would respond though with a huge five run top of the third, highlighted by an RBI double from
Joe Corsten and an RBI single from
Dustin DeBeau that gave the Golden Eagles a 5-2 lead.
CU would add three runs to the lead in the fourth thanks to an error my Mount Vernon and an RBI single from
Gabe Zeiger. The runs would continue to pour on, as the Golden Eagles added four more while MVNU to go up 12-2. The Cornerstone bullpen would then struggle giving up six runs in the final two innings, but CU would still hold on to a 12-8 game two victory.
