ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Everything seemed to be working for the Golden Eagles on Friday afternoon, as junior
Collin Young threw a complete game to give Cornerstone a 9-0 win in game one, and the offense irrupted for 15 runs to earn a 15-4 victory in game two. With the wins, CU moves back to .500 on the year at 15-15, 6-11 WHAC. Cornerstone will stay in Rochester Hills for the series finale against the Warriors tomorrow at 11 a.m.
Game 1 – Starter
Collin Young became the second Golden Eagle to throw a complete game on the mound this season, not allowing a run and striking out five in the nine-inning game in Rochester Hills. Young would get some early offense to add to his outstanding outing, as Cornerstone scored three in the top of the first on a
Joe Corsten RBI walk and a
Jon Stewart fielder's choice.
CU would add three more in the third inning, highlighted by a
Trenton Gilman RBI single to go up 6-0. The Golden Eagles would score one more in the fifth and two more in the ninth to bring the score to 9-0.
Collin Young would then close the game out with two of his five strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth to give CU the 9-0 victory in game one. Six Rochester errors would help the Cornerstone offense get the win, the most by any CU opponent so far this season.
Game 2 – The Golden Eagle offense irrupted in game two, starting the scoring with a single run in the second on an
Eric Bradberry single that scored
Gabe Zeiger. CU would score four more in the next three innings to get up 5-0 on Rochester. The Warriors then would respond with their first runs of the day, scoring two in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Cornerstone would quickly respond though, as
Aaron Krupansky recorded a two RBI single in the fifth to help CU move their lead to six. The designated hitter
Dustin DeBeau would hit a bases clearing double in the sixth move the Golden Eagles to 10 at 12-2. Rochester would get two runs back in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 12-4 and temporarily avoid the 10-run rule. Cornerstone would end the game by use of the 10-run rule after three more runs were plated in the seven to bring the advantage back to 15-4.
Brett Shure would come in for the final 1.2 innings to seal the victory after
Noah Reed went 5.1 innings recording six strikeouts in a 15-4 game two victory.
