WINTER HAVEN, Fla. –
Nick Hill and
Brady Eeles recorded their first career starts on the mound and each got a win as Cornerstone defeated Trinity Christian 1-0 and 7-3 on Wednesday afternoon. With the wins, CU earns a series split with the Trolls and moves to 11-8 on the year. The Golden Eagles will now take a day off tomorrow before beginning a conference series with Concordia on Friday at 4 p.m.
Game 1 – Cornerstone starter
Nick Hill and Trinity Christian starter Richard Yelnick commanded the game early allowing a total of four hits combined through the first three innings of play to keep the game scoreless. After back-to-back two out hits from
Aaron Krupansky and
Brady Volmering in the top of the fifth,
Adam Harvey would hit a single to get the first and only run on the board give CU the 1-0 lead.
Nick Hill would run into some trouble in the bottom of the sixth with runners getting on first and second with two outs, but
Kyle Herrick would enter and record a huge strikeout to hold the Golden Eagles 1-0 lead. Herrick would remain in the game for the bottom of the seventh and earn a save to give CU the 1-0 win in game one.
Game 2 – Game two would start with a run scored by Trolls leadoff hitter Chris Baker after he doubled and was hit home on a ground out later in the inning. Cornerstone would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the second as
Dustin DeBeau would hit a sacrifice fly to score
Joe Corsten and tie the game at 1-1.
Trinity Christian would begin to pull away in the top of the third, scoring two runs in the inning on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to go up 3-1. Starting pitcher
Brady Eeles would then help CU get back in it though, not only doing his job on the mound but at the plate, as he was hit by a pitch to score a run and cut the deficit to 3-2.
Joe Corsten would then hit a huge two RBI single to give the Golden Eagles the lead at 4-3.
Jon Stewart and
Brady Eeles would then add some insurance runs on a two RBI double and a sacrifice fly to give the Golden Eagles the 7-3 lead.
Noah Reed would close out the game with his first save of the year to give the Golden Eagles the 7-3 victory and series split.
