GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In their second to last home series of the regular season, the Cornerstone Baseball team picked up a sweep of non-conference foe Cleary University. The Golden Eagles won 1-0 in the opener and finished off the 2-game set with a 7-5 victory in the nightcap. The pair of wins lift CU to 22-20 on the year as they will host Roosevelt (Ill.) on Saturday in a 1 p.m. DH. Senior day will be celebrated in between the two games.
Game 1 – The Golden Eagles and Cougars were locked in a pitching duel in game one with both starting pitchers working six or more innings. CU starter
Noah Reed would pitch 6.2 innings striking out six while walking five in the game, while Cleary starter Rhett Holwerda went 6.0 innings with three K's and no walks.
The first and only run in the game would come in the bottom of the sixth when
Jarod Burton singled to score
Brady Eeles and take a 1-0 lead. The Cougars would find their best opportunity to score in the top of the seventh. Cornerstone would go to
Jon Martin out of the bullpen though to record the final out and strand two runners resulting in a 1-0 game one victory for the Golden Eagles.
Game 2 – CU struck first in their first at-bat when
Jarod Burton connected on an RBI ground out that scored
Aaron Krupansky. The lead was short-lived for CU as the Cougars brought across three runs in the top of the second inning to put the Golden Eagles into a hole.
After three consecutive at-bats without producing any runs, the Golden Eagles broke through with two of them in the bottom of the fifth as
Jon Stewart brought home
Jan Elias and Burton registered his second RBI on a bases-loaded walk.
The Cougars again struck right back to take a 5-3 lead in the top of the sixth but the Golden Eagles had one rally left in them as they scored four runs in the bottom of the inning before
Nick Hill came to lock things down in the seventh.
Brady Eeles tied up the game on a 2-RBI single and then Burton collected his third and fourth RBI's which turned out to be the game winning single, scoring Eeles and Stewart.
Hill got the final out in the sixth and all three in the seventh to post his second win of the season, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
