GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone baseball finished out the home portion of their 2017-18 campaign today as they fell in both games of a doubleheader to visiting Roosevelt University (Ill.). The 7-1 and 4-1 setbacks drop the Golden Eagles to 22-22 on the season as they will head into the final week of the year with a non-conference game at Davenport before heading to the east side of the state for a trio of games at UM-Dearborn.
Game 1 – Cornerstone threatened in each of the first two innings but was unable to capitalize on some key moments as they score remained 0-0. The Lakers then took advantage of some CU mistakes and pieced together some big hits on top of those to score three in the third and four in the fourth for a commanding 7-0 lead.
Nick Hill came on in relief to weather the storm and finished the day by going 3.0 innings while allowing only one hit and one walk. The CU offense could not muster the comeback as they scored their lone run in the sixth inning on an RBI double from
Adam Harvey that scored Brady Vomering.
Game 2 – Roosevelt (20-20, 14-9 CCAC) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning of game two and tacked on single runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Cornerstone's offense was again held in check by the Laker pitching staff as they brought across only one run when
Jon Stewart singled home Volmering in the 4
th.
