Men's Soccer drops season opener to Bethel

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles fell to the Bethel Pilots 3-2 in the season opener on Saturday afternoon. The team will be back in action on the road next weekend in Indiana, with a Friday evening match against Indiana Wesleyan and a Saturday evening match against Calumet College of St. Joseph.

How it Happened:
  • Cornerstone struck first with a goal just 12 minutes into the game when Richard Areche finished a loose ball in front
  • Bethel evened the game at 1-1 with a penalty kick in the 27th minute before grabbing a 2-1 lead in the 38th minute.
  • James Pipe knotted the game at 2-2 with 20 minutes to play off a pass from Sebastian Ramos
  • Bethel put away the game winner with seven minutes remaining

By the Numbers
  • Goal scorers Richard Areche and James Pipe each tallied four goals last season.
  • Joshua Mitchell made four saves in his varsity debut.
  • The Golden Eagles outshot the Pilots 16-15
  • Cornerstone had six corner kicks in the second half.
